Navigating Business Transitions with Clarity and Confidence

You’ve built something incredible, but transitioning your business can feel like staring into the unknown. Without a clear roadmap, it’s hard to know where to start, how to sustain momentum, and how to preserve relationships along the way. Whether you’re a current owner preparing to step away or a future leader ready to take the reins, a well-structured plan ensures that your legacy, business, and people continue to thrive.

Why Planning Your Transition Early Matters

Too many business leaders wait too long to start the conversation, which can lead to confusion, misunderstandings, and even broken relationships. In the words of Zig Ziglar: “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

As a thought partner in numerous business transitions, I’ve joined The Transition Strategists, an international boutique consultancy specializing in business succession and transition planning for family, private, and franchise businesses. My experience aligns with TTS’s process and values—helping owners successfully navigate one of the most significant decisions of their lives.

Have a Question?

Commonly Asked Questions:

  • A: The further you can get ahead on the planning process, the better. I’ve seen too many situations in which the owner has a plan in their head, only for “Life to get in the way.” It’s best to see it play out how you want it to.
  • A: I have seen a three—to five-year horizon work well due to the decision-making around valuation and taxes, as well as leadership alignment, training, and process.
  • A:  You may have business partners who wish to elevate the business, having matured within the company.  They have encountered both challenges and moments of success.
  • A:  Do you have a family member, such as a sibling, niece, or nephew, who might want to take the helm? This is an option that often goes untapped.
  • A:  This discussion should occur early within the family and with the franchisor.  Some larger franchise systems may have in-house training programs for next-generation leaders.  Others may not.  With a review of the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), we can begin the planning process to ensure the franchisor says yes.
  • A:  That’s precisely what we do.  We will use only the tools that make sense for you and your plan.  There are benefits that come from our workshops, peer discussions, and planning tools.  You may or may not choose to use all of them.
  • A:  We will tailor our work to meet the needs of you and your successors.  You are the client.  We want to ensure that your objectives are met and that we take you where you want to land.
